Bajaj Auto is going to launch a new entry-level Chetak electric scooter in June. The move is part of the company’s broader strategy to further strengthen its position in the fast-growing electric mobility market. However, according to a recent statement from Bajaj, the supply of rare earth magnets may end by July 2025, which may delay the launch.
Chetak 35 Series Platform
The new variant will be based on the success of the Chetak 35 Series platform launched in December 2024. According to Rakesh Sharma, Executive Director, Bajaj Auto, the Chetak brand has seen a significant increase in market share. The fourth quarter market share put Chetak at the number one position in India’s electric two-wheeler market.
Chetak 2903 upgrade
“With the introduction of the third 35 series variant, the 3503, at the end of May 2025, as well as the launch of a new variant in June – which will be an upgrade to the entry-level and high-selling 2903 – the Chetak portfolio will become much stronger. This portfolio will be further expanded to address emerging sub-segments in fiscal year 2026,” Sharma said.
Retail network extension
To support this expansion, Bajaj Auto has expanded its retail network, which includes 310 Chetak experience centers and over 3,000 sales points across India. CFO Dinesh Thapar said the company’s electric vehicle portfolio has benefited significantly from cost reductions and production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes, allowing Bajaj Auto to remain competitive amid affordable prices in the broader market.
