New ABS Rule for all two-wheelers from January 2026

New ABS Rule For Two Wheelers: The Government of India is going to make ABS safety feature mandatory in all two-wheelers from 2026. Let’s know the new rules, its benefits and how ABS works.

ABS Rule For Two Wheelers: The Government of India has taken a big step regarding two-wheeler safety. Till now ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) was mandatory only for bikes larger than 125cc, but now this rule will be applicable to bikes of all engine sizes. That is, now it will be necessary to provide ABS in small engine bikes like Hero Splendor, Bajaj Platina and TVS Sport.

ABS i.e. Anti-Lock Braking System is an important safety feature that prevents the bike’s tires from locking when sudden braking is applied. It monitors the speed of the wheels during braking and helps the rider maintain balance by controlling the brake pressure when needed. This prevents the bike from slipping and reduces the risk of accident.

There are two types of ABS

Actually, there are two types of ABS – the first is Single Channel ABS which affects only the front tire, and the second is Dual Channel ABS which works on both the front and rear tires. Therefore it is considered more safe.

What was the rule till now?

Currently, ABS is not mandatory in bikes with engines less than 125cc in the country, due to which more than 45% of two-wheelers are deprived of this safety feature. Since commuter bikes with small engines are sold the most in India, this rule will prove to be beneficial for crores of riders from the point of view of safety.

Big decision regarding helmets too

Apart from this, the government is preparing to bring another important rule. Soon it will be made mandatory to provide two BIS-certified helmets with every two-wheeler. Two-wheeler riders account for 44% of road accident deaths and most of these deaths are due to serious head injuries. If helmets are provided at the time of buying a bike, awareness will increase and lives can be saved. With this new change, every class of two-wheeler riders will get the benefit of safety. Whether someone buys a budget bike or a premium scooter, every rider will get better protection with the mandatory use of ABS and helmet.
