Universal and Illumination have revealed The Super Mario Galaxy Movie as the sequel to the record-breaking Super Mario Bros. Movie. It will release in theaters worldwide on April 3, 2026.
Nintendo has officially confirmed that the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be titled The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Announced during a Nintendo Direct ahead of the 40th anniversary of the franchise, the animated film is set to release on April 3, 2026. Fans can also look forward to the return of the original voice cast.
Universal Confirms Title of Mario Sequel as “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie”
Universal Pictures and Illumination have officially announced the title of the highly anticipated sequel to the blockbuster Super Mario Bros. Movie. The next chapter will be called The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and is set to hit theaters on April 3, 2026. The reveal came during a Nintendo Direct event ahead of the 40th anniversary of the original 1985 video game.
Inspired by the Hit Wii Game
The upcoming film takes its name from Nintendo’s popular Super Mario Galaxy game, released in 2007 for the Wii. Fans got a first teaser during the presentation, featuring Mario resting under a tree near Princess Peach’s castle before the scene transitions into space. The short clip also showed glimpses of Monty Mole, Cheep Cheeps, and Toads.
Returning Voice Cast
Just like the first film, the sequel will feature its all-star lineup of voice actors. Chris Pratt returns as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.
A Record-Breaking First Movie
Released in April 2023, The Super Mario Bros. Movie became the most successful video game adaptation ever, earning 1.36 billion dollars worldwide. It also ranked as the fifth highest-grossing animated film in history, just behind Inside Out 2, Frozen 2, The Lion King, and Ne Zha 2.
What’s Next for Nintendo Movies
Nintendo is expanding its cinematic universe further. The company has partnered with Sony Pictures for a Legend of Zelda movie, scheduled for release on March 26, 2027. Directed by Wes Ball, the film will star Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link.
