Amid rising cases of online fraud, Truecaller has launched a new ‘Scam Checker’ tool. This tool enables users to verify suspicious phone numbers, web links, or messages. The new feature helps users determine whether a received message or link is associated with a potential scam. In India, the Scam Checker has been made available to Android users, while its web version can be used globally.
With Scam Checker, users can verify unknown or suspicious phone numbers. This tool leverages Truecaller’s existing scam detection system and signals from the community. Users can access information if a number has been previously reported or if there is data regarding suspicious activity associated with it. Additionally, details about scams reported by other users can be viewed in Truecaller’s ScamFeed.
Checking Before Opening Links
With the help of the new tool, suspicious links can be checked even before they are opened. For instance, if a user receives a link via WhatsApp, SMS, or email—purportedly from a bank or related to deliveries, rewards, jobs, or government services—they can verify it using the Scam Checker. The system also analyzes elements like shortened URLs and redirects, providing information based on available risk signals.
Scanning Messages
Truecaller has not limited the Scam Checker to just phone numbers and links; users can also check suspicious messages. For example, if a message asks the user to close an account, make a payment, update KYC details, or claim a reward, they can verify it. The system identifies any numbers or links within the message and displays relevant information regarding potential scams associated with them.
The company has stated that the ‘Scam Checker’ will be updated with additional capabilities. In the future, an option to check suspicious SMS messages or chats by uploading screenshots may also be added. However, the absence of reports against a number or link does not guarantee that it is completely safe. Therefore, it is essential to verify information through the concerned company’s official website or app before sharing banking details, OTPs, passwords, or payment-related information.
